DER BRITISCHE KOMPONIST UND LIEDTEXTER LESLIE BRICUSSE IST GESTORBEN

Der am 29. Januar 1931 in London geborene britische Komponist und Liedtexter Leslie «Brickman» Bricusse (Bild) ist am 19. Oktober 2021 in Saint-Paul-de-Vence (Frankreich) gestorben. Er begann Mitte der 1950er-Jahre als Liedertexter und Komponist von Filmmusik und schuf im Laufe seiner Karriere Beiträge zur Musik für mehr als 100 Film- und Fernsehproduktionen. Zweimal wurde der Brite mit dem Oscar ausgezeichnet: 1968 für den besten Song («Talk to the Animals» aus «Doctor Dolittle») und 1983 für die beste Musik (zusammen mit Henry Mancini für «Victor/Victoria»). «Candy Man», «Feeling Good» und «Goldfinger» gehören zu den Welthits, für die Leslie Bricusse verantwortlich zeichnete.

Leslie Bricusse: ‚Lyrical genius‘ of film dies aged 90

Leslie Bricusse, the prolific British songwriter behind many of cinema’s biggest hits such as Candyman and Goldfinger, has died at the age of 90.

His friend Dame Joan Collins described him as «one of the giant songwriters of our time». Petula Clark, who sang You and I from 1968’s Goodbye Mr Chips, told BBC Radio 4 he was «extraordinary». Bricusse’s career spanned 60 years with other credits including Talk to the Animals from Doctor Dolittle. He also wrote Candyman and Pure Imagination from the 1971 film Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Stage impresario Andrew Lloyd Webber released a statement, calling Bricusse «the most underestimated British songwriter of all time».

The songwriter Leslie Bricusse, who has died aged 90, was a quiet man with an unshakeable sense of his own worth, an outlook justly cultivated in the early 1960s when his two stage musicals with Anthony Newley, Stop the World – I Want to Get Off (1961) and The Roar of the Greasepaint – The Smell of the Crowd (1964), spawned songs that became standards recorded by Sammy Davis Jr (What Kind of Fool Am I?), Nina Simone (Feeling Good) and Tony Bennett (Who Can I Turn To?), as well as Newley himself.
