Der am 12. März 1938 in Dallas (Texas) geborene US-amerikanische Schlagzeuger Ron Tutt (Bild) ist am 16. Oktober 2021 in Franklin (Tennessee) gestorben. International bekannt wurde er vor allem als Mitglied der TCB Band («Taking Care of Business»), die Elvis Presley auf Tourneen und bei Aufnahmen begleitete. Er spielte in seiner langen Musikerkarriere aber u.a. auch bei Konzerten und für Aufnahmen von The Carpenters, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Neil Diamond, Billy Joel, Emmylou Harris, Gram Parson und Jerry Garcia.

On working with such legendary singers, Ron comments, «If I had to narrow it down, the two greatest music influences on my life would be Elvis Presley and Neil Diamond. Elvis for the flashy, explosive, slightly out of control, style of playing that he brought out in me that mirrored his performance and personality. Neil has influenced me to be a disciplined team player. He leaves little to chance. He makes sure we are all well-rehearsed and fundamentally prepared. We know we are going to win every time we go on stage – just like a great sports team, and that’s a great feeling!»

Ronnie Tutt, Drummer for Elvis Presley and the Jerry Garcia Band, Dead at 83

Ronnie Tutt, drummer and original member of Elvis Presley’s TCB Band and the Jerry Garcia Band and a famed session musician who performed alongside Billy Joel, Buckingham Nicks and more, has died at the age of 83.

Elvis Presley Enterprises announced Tutt’s death Saturday, writing on the Graceland website, «All of us with Elvis Presley Enterprises were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Ronnie Tutt. In addition to being a legendary drummer, he was a good friend to many of us here at Graceland.»

Tutt, usually called Ronnie, joined Elvis’s group after his successful 1968 «comeback special,» taking the seat vacated by Presley’s longtime drummer D.J. Fontana. Album collectors first heard him driving the King’s rhythm section on the «Elvis in Person at the International Hotel» live half of the double album «From Memphis to Vegas / From Vegas to Memphis», released in October 1969. Tutt stayed with The King until the end of his life in 1977, and can be heard on the spectacular «As Recorded at Madison Square Garden» album from 1972 and «Aloha from Hawaii Via Satellite» from 1973.

Die Elvis Presley Enterprises, die den Nachlass des Sängers und sein ehemaliges Anwesen Graceland verwalten, erinnerten daran, dass Tutt von 1969 bis 1977 für Elvis trommelte. Er trat der TCB Band 1969 gemeinsam mit dem Gitarristen James Burton bei, anlässlich der Eröffnung von Presleys Residenz in Las Vegas, und blieb Elvis bis zu dessen Tod 1977 treu.

«Er war nicht nur ein großartiger Schlagzeuger, sondern auch ein guter Freund für viele von uns hier in Graceland», hieß es in dem Statement weiter.

Our dear friend and bandmate, the legendary Ron Tutt has passed away. It’s been my privilege to share the stage with Ronnie for more than 40 years. He was truly one of the all-time greats in Rock and Roll. God bless you, Ronnie. Your wonderful talent will live on as the backbeat to the music of our lives. Give my regards to Elvis, I’m sure he’s glad to get the band back together. We love you, Ronnie.

I’m very sad to hear of the death of Ronnie Tutt. He played on the original recording of ‘Piano Man’ in 1973 and most of the other songs on that album. Ron was a power drummer who also played with finesse. His timing was impeccable and he played his drum parts to the lyrics, as well as the music in any song he played on. His live performances with Elvis Presley were legendary. He will be greatly missed.

My heart is broken. One of my favorite touring drummers, TCB Ronnie Tutt has his wings now… Always wanted my drummers to resemble that Ronnie Tutt sound! I loved the way he played. And of course I loved ELVIS!!! He was exciting to watch and I was so into long drum endings using all the toms and followed Elvis’ every move. My thoughts and prayers are with his wife and family on this day! It’s a very sad day! It seems I’m losing so many great friends and people I’ve looked up to for a long time. It’ll never be the same. Life changes every day!!
