Von 2004 bis 2014 hatte Davies das Amt Master of the Queen’s Music inne. (…)

Composer Peter Maxwell Davies dies aged 81
One of the foremost musicians of our time, Maxwell Davies was a fearless figurehead for the postwar avant garde. He made it his mission to connect with as many different audiences and performers as possible, writing music for children, for his Orkney community, as well as grand symphonies – 10 of them, concertos, string quartets, and music theatre works.

The wild child of contemporary music, he delighted in pushing the boundaries to the extent that some of his earlier works were described as unplayable.
But he later became an establishment figure and was appointed as Master of the Queen’s Music from 2004 to 2014 – the musical equivalent of poet laureate.
