Swedish DJ Avicii, one of the world’s biggest dance music stars, has died in Oman at the age of 28.

Avicii’s club anthems include Wake Me Up, Levels, and recently, Lonely Together with Rita Ora.

One of the most popular and successful electronic dance-music artists of all time – he scored a No. 4 hit on the Billboard 200 in 2013 with «Wake Me Up» regularly appeared in the Top 5 of Forbes‘ «Highest-Paid DJs» lists – he retired from live performing in 2016 at the peak of his success, citing health reasons.

In 2013, Avicii released his debut studio album, True, which featured the game-changing, massive international hit «Wake Me Up!» ft. Aloe Blacc. Combining EDM, folk and country music, the song became a No. 1 hit in many countries and peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100. His second album, Stories, dropped in 2015 and featured vocals from Chris Martin, Wyclef Jean, Robbie Williams, Matisyahu, Brandon Flowers, Gavin DeGraw and more. The EP Avīci (01) came out in Aug. 2017 and featured his Rita Ora collaboration «Lonely Together.»

Since achieving widespread commercial success, Bergling began working with his manager and executive producer Ash Pournouri to start House for Hunger in 2011, a charity dedicated to alleviating global hunger. The pair wanted to showcase the giving spirit fostered by the house music community. Bergling explained, «You have to give something back. I am so fortunate to be in the position where I can actually do that. I feel lucky every day when I wake up and am able to do what I love and make a living.» In addition to donating $1 million to Feeding America, a charity founded by John van Hengel, House for Hunger has helped fund the efforts of The Feed Foundation, started by Laura Bush, allowing it to distribute over 2 million school meals throughout Africa.

Anfang Juni 2013 erschien (…) die Single Wake Me Up, die aus einem Gesangspart von Aloe Blacc und einem Instrumentalteil von Bergling zusammengesetzt ist. Das Lied wurde sofort ein europaweiter Erfolg und erreichte in mehreren Ländern Platz eins. Auch darüber hinaus war er erfolgreich und kam unter anderem in Australien und Neuseeland auf Platz eins und in den USA auf Platz vier. Bereits nach wenigen Monaten erreichte die Single sechsmal Platin-Status und zweimal Gold-Status.
