Der am 8. Juni 1951 in Danville (Virginia) geborene US-amerikanische Gitarrist, Sänger, Komponist und Bluegrass-Musiker Tony Rice (Bild) ist am 25. Dezember 2020 In Reidsville (North Carolina) gestorben. Er war ein ausserordentlich einflussreicher Meister der akustischen Gitarre in den Bereichen von Bluegrass, Progressive bluegrass, Newgrass, Blues, Jazz und Songwriter-orientiertem Folk. Rice arbeitete u.a. mit J.D. Crowe, Jerry Garcia, David Grisman, Norman Blake, Clarence White, Ricky Skaggs, Béla Fleck, Bobby Hicks, Ry Cooder, Herb Pedersen, Chris Hillman und Alison Krauss zusammen. 2013 wurde Rice in die International Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame aufgenommen. 1983 erhielt er einen Grammy für die Best Country Instrumental Performance. Unvergesslich bleibt der Auftritt von Tony Rice 1977 am 1. Int. Gurtenfestival in Bern zusammen mit Bill Keith, David Grisman und Darol Anger als Bicentennial Bluegrass Band.

It is with a heavy heart we say goodbye to one of the most iconic voices & musicians in bluegrass. David Anthony «Tony» Rice passed away yesterday, Dec 25, at his home in Reidsville, NC. Few will ever match his skill & influence. Rest in Peace, Tony.

Tony Rice was the single most influential acoustic guitar player in the last 50 years. Many if not all of the Bluegrass guitar players of today would say that they cut their teeth on Tony Rice’s music. He loved hearing the next generation players play his licks. I think that’s where he got most of his joy as a player. With many IBMA Awards and a Grammy Award, Tony was a gracious recipient of the International Bluegrass Music Association’s highest honor as an inductee into their Hall of Fame in 2013.

Sad news for a sad year. We’ve lost Tony Rice, undisputedly the most gifted and influential acoustic guitarist of our time. He was a genius of the flatpick style, with an unmistakable touch, impeccable taste and incredible tone. In addition, he was a fine singer. Tony was able to bridge the gap between traditional country, bluegrass, folk and acoustic jazz styles with alacrity. His musical credits would go on far longer than I could recount here, but if you don’t know his music, look him up.

Tony was the original guitarist in my quintet and his playing established a standard for acoustic flat-top playing that remains unequaled to this day. I’ll never forget the time, shortly after we started playing together, that Tony said to me, «I can’t write tunes.» I told him that he absolutely could, and the very next day he came in with his first composition, «Swing ’51», which we recorded on the first DGQ LP. I’d like to share that performance with you all. Rest in peace, «T». «Swing 51» link: https://youtu.be/rbDf4sutxUU

Tony Rice took the guitar, music and us to new places. It was always great to see him offstage or on. He brought tone bouquets of flowers to our ears and spirits. His music said it all.

Bluegrass Great Tony Rice Dies at 69

«I’m beyond heartbroken to hear about the passing of Tony Rice,» wrote Chris Thile. «No one has had a more profound impact on my musical world. His playing, singing, writing and arranging broke the bluegrass mold and will eternally attest to the fact that music can take you anywhere, from anywhere.»

The distinctive flatpicker was known as one of the greatest players in bluegrass

As a solo performer, collaborator, and leader of the Tony Rice Unit, Rice was known for his inimitable skill as a flatpicker, an intricate, fast-paced, melodic style of guitar playing. Rice’s distinctive style, heavily influenced by jazz, was an influence on scores of artists in the bluegrass world and beyond, including the likes of Jason Isbell and Steve Martin. His signature guitar, a Martin D-28, had belonged to the Byrds‘ Clarence White.

Rice, whose career spanned 40 years, played with the band the New South, and frequently collaborated with fellow bluegrass musicians David Grisman and Norman Blake. Renowned for his flatpicking guitar style, Rice also led the Tony Rice Unit and the Bluegrass Album Band, releasing the records Manzanita and Church Street Blues under the former to great acclaim.
