Die am 28. Oktober 1929 in Brigg (North Lincolnshire, England) geborene britische Schauspielerin Joan Plowright (Bild) ist am 16. Januar 2025 in London gestorben. Im Laufe ihrer langen Karriere wurde die Bühnen- und Filmdarstellerin mit zwei Golden Globes sowie dem Tony Award ausgezeichnet. In den 1950er-Jahren spielte sie regelmässig am Royal Court Theatre, wobei sie oft in Arbeiterklasse-Rollen spielte und laut dem Nachruf im «Guardian» für eine junge, energische Generation an Theaterschauspieler:innen stand. Später spielte sie häufig mit ihrem Ehemann Laurence Olivier zusammen. Zwar hatte Plowright bereits 1951 ihr Fernsehdebüt und 1957 ihr Kinodebüt gegeben, sie trat aber lange nur sporadisch vor die Kamera. Ihren wohl bekanntesten frühen Filmauftritt hatte sie 1960 neben Olivier in «Der Komödiant», der Verfilmung eines Theaterstücks, in dem die beiden zuvor bereits gemeinsam aufgetreten waren. Erst in den 1980er-Jahren folgten regelmässigere Filmengagements für Plowright. 1970 wurde sie als Commander in den Order of the British Empire aufgenommen.

Dame Joan Plowright, one of Britain’s most celebrated stage and screen stars and the widow of Sir Laurence Olivier, has died at the age of 95. Her career spanned 60 years and included an Oscar nomination for the 1991 film Enchanted April. She married Olivier in 1961 after starring opposite him as his daughter in The Entertainer, and became a leading member of the National Theatre, which he set up.

In her work at the Royal Court in the 1950s she symbolised a new working-class energy, although in reality she was the daughter of a Lincolnshire newspaper editor, and through her marriage to Laurence Olivier, she helped to shape the newly founded National Theatre company in the 1960s.

Plowright, who officially retired in 2014 after becoming legally blind, is best known for her roles in Dennis the Menace, 101 Dalmatians and The Entertainer, as well as Enchanted April, which earned her an Oscar nomination in 1993.

The role also earned her a Golden Globe win and at the same ceremony she also won Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Miniseries or Motion Picture Made for Television for Stalin. This makes her the second of only four actresses ever to win two Golden Globes in the same year.
