Die am 25. September 1952 als Gloria Watkins in Hopkinsville (Kentucky) geborene US-amerikanische Literaturwissenschaftlerin, Autorin, Dichterin und Aktivistin bell hooks (Bild) ist am 15. Dezember 2021 in Berea (Kentucky) gestorben. Sie war eine Verfechterin feministischer und antirassistischer Ansätze und weitherum für ihre Vorlesungen, Reden und öffentlichen Auftritte bekannt. Seit Ende der 1970er-Jahre benannte sie sich selber nach ihrer Urgrossmutter, schrieb ihren Namen aber immer in Kleinbuchstaben. US-Vizepräsidentin Kamala Harris schrieb auf Twitter: «Der tiefgreifende und positive Einfluss von bell hooks wird uns noch über Generationen hinweg begleiten.»

According to the Kentucky Writers Hall of Fame, where she was inducted in 2018, hooks began writing poetry at age 10. As a young person, she developed a strong voice against racism and sexism, which later filtered into her dozens of books and essays on the intersections of race, gender, class, and systems of oppression and power.

In den USA sind sie schon lange Klassiker der Theorie des Rassismus und des feministischen Schreibens. Jüngere Schriftstellerinnen und Autoren, besonders solche, die über ihren Standpunkt am Rand der kulturell dominanten Gesellschaft nachdenken, erzählen immer wieder, wie bell hooks ihnen des Weg bereitet hat.
