Die am 6. August 1934 in Brooklyn (New York City) geborene US-amerikanische Dichterin, Schriftstellerin, Herausgeberin, Künstlerin und Aktivistin Diane DiPrima (Bild) ist am 25. Oktober 2020 in San Francisco gestorben. DiPrima hatte schon als Kind angefangen zu schreiben, und als sie 19 war, korrespondierte sie mit Ezra Pound und Kenneth Patchen. Ende der 1950er-Jahre lernte sie Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac und andere Autoren der Beat Generation kennen, was ihr ganzes Werk beeinflusste. Sie war, zunächst mit ihrem Geliebten LeRoi Jones (seit 1967 Amiri Baraka), dann alleine, Herausgeberin der Poesiezeitschrift «The Floating Bear» und Mitgründerin des New York Poets Theatre, sowie Gründerin der «Poets Press». 1966 lebte sie einige Zeit in Timothy Learys psychedelischer Community in Millbrook (New York). DiPrima druckte die beiden ersten Ausgaben von Learys «Psychodelic Prayers» (1966). Diane DiPrima veröffentlichte 35 Gedichtbände. Ihr Werk wurde in mehr als 20 Sprachen übersetzt.*

She decided to be a poet at 14, and wrote every day for the rest of her life

Beat poet Diane di Prima died today after long illness at 86. She was born in Brooklyn, a second-generation American of Italian descent. She went to Swarthmore, then Greenwich Village, and joined Timothy O’Leary’s community in upstate New York, made a lifetime move to San Francisco. She published more than 40 books, including This Kind of Bird Flies Backwards, Revolutionary Poems, and the semi-autobiographical Memoirs of a Beatnik.

Diane di Prima, Beat Poet And Activist, Dead At 86

One night in the 1950s Diane di Prima was at a party at Allen Ginsberg’s place in New York City. It was usual poet stuff – talking, reading, smoking, drinking – until 11:30 p.m. came around and di Prima said she was going home to relieve her babysitter. Jack Kerouac, also a guest, shouted, «Di Prima, unless you forget about your babysitter, you’re never going to be a writer.»

The Revolutionary Diane di Prima Dies at 86

We’re devastated to share the news that Diane di Prima, the legendary poet, activist, crucial lifeline to the Beat generation and eventual Poet Laureate of San Francisco, has died at the age of 86. Her Revolutionary Letters, originally published in 1968 and dedicated to Bob Dylan, is forthcoming from City Lights in an expanded edition.

Diane di Prima, feminist poet of the Beat Generation, dies at 86

Diane di Prima, a poet and writer who was regarded as the most significant female member of the Beat Generation, the male-dominated countercultural movement of the 1950s to which she lent her feminist, sometimes anarchist sensibility, died Oct. 25 at a hospital in San Francisco.
