Der am 9. Juli 1937 in Bradford geborene britische Kunstmaler, Grafiker, Bühnenbildner und Fotograf David Hockney (Bild) ist am 11. Juni 2026 in London gestorben. Er gilt als einer der einflussreichsten Künstler des 20. Jahrhunderts mit den Genre-Schwerpunkten Landschaftsmalerei und Porträtmalerei. Hockney wird oft als ein führender Vertreter der Pop-Art nahestehenden Kunst bezeichnet, er verfügte allerdings über ein eigenständiges künstlerisches Profil. Seine Werke erreichen auf Auktionen hohe Preise. Soon after he moved to Los Angeles in the 1960s, the artist David Hockney was visited by his mother. As they drove back from the airport, far from her native Bradford, she gazed about her in apparent awe at the beauties of sun-kissed southern California. Then, as Hockney was fond of recalling, she turned and said: “I don’t understand it. Such lovely drying weather and no one’s got their washing out.” Mrs Hockney thus joined Mrs Warhol and Alan Bennett’s “Mam” as working-class mothers who delighted in their son’s success without ever quite understanding it.
Hockney, who has died aged 88, had been similarly awestruck when he first went to California in 1963, commissioned to make work for a show in New York. His response, though, was quite different. Looking down from a Pan Am jet, he marvelled at the blue glint of swimming pools and thought, “My God, this place needs its Piranesi.”

King leads tributes to ‚giant of the art world‘ David Hockney
The King has joined the art world in paying tribute to David Hockney, one of the UK’s most important and popular artists, who has died at the age of 88.
In a personal message, King Charles said he and the Queen were «greatly saddened» to learn of the death of «a giant of the world of art and painting, a Yorkshireman through and through, and a dear friend and inspiration to so many».
Artist Dame Tracey Emin said she felt privileged to have known Hockney, adding: «A great artist and a wonderful man, who with the power of art changed the perception of Britishness. A proud chain-smoking homosexual, who flew the flag higher than any other British artist.»

I was 16 and starstruck. At the top floor of several flights of stairs was a transformative oasis of light and, waiting at the door, was the peroxide blonde bombshell that was David Hockney. Smoking and beyond charming and funny and irreverent, his Yorkshire accent and charisma were as palpable as his art. His gripe then was not restrictions on smoking but the restrictive opening hours of English pubs and bars compared to 24-hour freedom in America. Ever the radical libertarian.

Lord Snowdon had first photographed Hockney in 1963 for The Sunday Times. Fifteen years later in 1978 he photographed him again, this time for Vogue. “Hockney at Home” found the painter in a new studio at Powis Terrace, Notting Hill. “I’m always complaining about London, but I keep coming back,” Hockney told Vogue. Not long after he decided to make Los Angeles his permanent home.
“David was rather fun,” recalled Snowdon, who admired his canary-coloured trousers and mismatched socks, but took greater delight in the studio’s pinboard, featuring – prominently – naked snapshots of his former partner, model and muse, Peter Schlesinger. Snowdon failed to slip the images past the editor-in-chief and into the magazine, but the Hockney bathroom made it, complete with his latest hair dyes in shades “Happy Honey” and “Winsome Wheat”.

From the azure blue swimming pools of California to the lush green landscapes of his native Yorkshire, David Hockney’s art was filled with colour and light.
No one else would have chosen a view from his bedroom window in Bridlington, or Polaroids of his mother on a day trip to Bolton Abbey, to represent part of a lifelong body of work. But no-one ever said David Hockney was a conformist.
It was never more apparent than in 1989, when his choice of medium for a stylized painting of his home city was the front cover of the Bradford telephone directory.

His colorful figurative paintings were both conservative and iconoclastic, defying the dominant abstract schools of the mid-20th century.
David Hockney, the English artist whose deftly designed and suavely colored paintings turned trans-Atlantic attention to figurative and narrative art beginning in the late 1950s and early 1960s after decades in which abstraction had dominated, died on Thursday at his home in London.
A native of Yorkshire, Mr. Hockney lived for many years in Los Angeles, long enough to refer to himself as an “English Los Angeleno” and to create images that, for many viewers, captured the sun-soaked atmosphere of that city as surely as Joan Didion did in prose.
And although his art was conservative in an era that also gave rise to Conceptualism, he was progressive in at least one way: He was one of the first widely popular artists of his time to make work with undisguised gay content and one of the few to take a public stand against the censoring of homosexual imagery.

Calling himself “an English Los Angeleno,” Hockney immortalized the city’s sparkling swimming pools, palm trees and beautiful young men, then went on to experiment with intricate photo collages, portrait suites, painted and filmed images of Yorkshire landscapes, iPad drawings and more.
“Los Angeles will always be thought of by many people worldwide through the images that David created,” said Stephanie Barron, senior curator and head of the modern art department at Los Angeles County Museum of Art, which holds more than 150 works by Hockney in its permanent collection.
“But for me one of David’s greatest gifts was his ability to look at the world with wonder and joy in whatever medium he decided to work in. … He was fearless in his embrace of technology, and I think that enormous curiosity ran throughout his career, and continued to the end. He was involved in looking at art history and the future simultaneously.”
Barron, who knew Hockney for 50 years, said LACMA staged more exhibitions of Hockney’s work during that time than any other artist. “David considered LACMA and the Tate his two museums,” she said.

David Hockney ist tot. Man mag es kaum glauben. Bei öffentlichen Auftritten saß er zuletzt im Rollstuhl, gehandicapt und doch von jugendlicher Ausstrahlung. So wie er die Welt mit seinen blauen Kinderaugen betrachtete, leuchtete die Welt aus Hockneys Bildern auch heraus. Der große britische Grafiker, Bühnenbildner, Fotograf und vor allem Maler hatte keine Scheu vor der Farbe.
Allerdings: Ein Regenbogen strahlt am schönsten vor düsteren Wolken. Hockney malte nicht «schön» um der Schönheit willen. «Everyone does look», sagte er vor vielen Jahren in einem Fernsehinterview. Alle schauen irgendwie auf die Welt. «Es ist nur die Frage», ergänzte der Künstler, «wie genau man hinschauen will, nicht wahr?» Hinschauen kann wehtun. Hockneys Farben auch.

Eine echte Marke
David Hockney war anfangs ein Propagandist in eigener Sache und sehr viel später ein Aushängeschild künstlerischer Frivolität. Seine malerische Exzellenz war eher ein Vehikel, eine Möglichkeit, das Establishment zugleich zu veralbern und zu betören. Er war ein Kind seiner Zeit, ja, aber sehr früh schon ein Pate dieser Zeit. Wohin auch immer er ging, tat sich ein Vorhang auf, schien die Jahresuhr einen Sprung nach vorn zu machen.
Mit 33 Jahren kam die erste Retrospektive. Seine Kunst sah immer aus wie Spiel. Sein Cross-over von Gattungen und Stilen wurde immer wieder auf Bildformeln getrimmt, die etwas Modellhaftes an sich hatten, etwas Illustratives. Deren Wurzeln lagen im kindlichen Staunen. Nie hat Hockney, in 60 Jahren, den Draht zum großen Publikum verloren.

»Es war ein gutes Leben«
Ein Swimming Pool unter wolkenlosem Himmel, der Zauber des blauen Wassers. Niemand hat diesen Sehnsuchtsort jemals so gemalt wie David Hockney, der Meistermaler der Moderne in der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts. So leicht, so treffend, dass man beim Anblick dieser Bilder sofort in diese besondere, sonnentrunkene Poolstimmung versetzt wird.
Andersherum gilt es auch: Liegt man an einem Pool und schaut von seinem Buch etwas länger in das Blau des Wassers, muss man irgendwann an Hockney denken. Egal, ob man nun gerade in Hollywood, Südfrankreich oder aber im Prinzenbad in Berlin-Kreuzberg ist.

Darüber, dass er im Jahr 2023 seine Werke sogar für eine kommerzielle «Immersive Art Show» zur Verfügung stellte, rümpften so manche Kunstkenner die Nase – der damals 85-jährige Hockney hingegen war begeistert von der Idee, seine Gemälde begehbar zu machen.
