Die 1946 in New York geborene US-amerikanische Video- und Installationskünstlerin Dara Birnbaum (Bild) ist am 2. Mai 2025 gestorben. Ab Ende der 1970er-Jahre beschäftigte sich Birnbaum mit dem Medium Fernsehen. Sie hinterfragte die äusseren Bildwelten, die Ausdrucksformen und die manipulative Wirkung dieses Massenmediums. Sie engagierte sich früh für eine Gleichsetzung der Videokunst mit den klassischen Kunstsparten und nahm teil an der Feministischen Kunstbewegung. Zu ihren bekanntesten Arbeiten zählen «Technology/Transformation: Wonder Woman» (1978 bis 1979). Mitte der 1980er-Jahre begann sie mit grossen raumfüllenden Installationen. «Rio Videowall» (1987 bis 1989) gilt als erste permanente Videoinstallation im öffentlichen Raum eines Shoppingcenters. Dara Birnbaum, Video Artist Whose Pivotal Works Talked Back to the Media, Dies at 78

Dara Birnbaum, a video artist who forever changed her medium with works that rebelled against the mainstream media, has died on Friday at 78. A spokesperson for Marian Goodman Gallery, her longtime representative, confirmed her death but did not specify a cause.

Hosts of video artists working today owe a debt to Birnbaum, who found clever ways of upending the one-way stream of information that pours forth in the media, and in particular on television. During the late ’70s and ’80s, she began harvesting images from pirated tapes of TV programs, then reediting their images. Resequenced and remixed, these images now stuttered and repeated, discouraging passive viewing.

Birnbaums wohl bekanntestes Werk ist «Technology/Transformation: Wonder Woman» aus den Jahren 1978/79, das sich anhand der Superheldin mit Fragen des Feminismus auseinandersetzt. «Arabesque» aus dem Jahr 2011 stellt Pianistinnen und die Komponistin Clara Schumann ins Zentrum einer Installation, in der Birnbaum auch Youtube-Schipsel verarbeitet. Ihr Schaffen hatte nach Einschätzung des Magazins ArtNews großen Einfluss auf das Denken sowohl von Kunstschaffenden als auch von Menschen außerhalb der Kunstwelt. Birnbaum war mehrmals auf der Documenta in Kassel und der Biennale Venedig vertreten. Eine große Einzelausstellung widmete ihr der Neue Berliner Kunstverein 2021.
