Die am 10. April 1938 in Newark (New Jersey) geborene US-amerikanische Kunstmalerin sowie Konzept- und Installations-Künstlerin Pat Steir (Bild) ist am 25. März 2026 in New York City gestorben. 1964 nahm Steir an der Ausstellung «Drawings» im Museum of Modern Art teil. Ihre erste Einzelausstellung fand 1964 in der Terry-Dintenfass-Galerie in New York statt, während sie als Illustratorin und Buchdesignerin tätig war. Pat Steir leitete von 1965 bis 1969 als künstlerische Direktorin Harper & Row und war Mitarbeiterin der feministischen Magazine «Printed Matter», «Heresies» und «Semio-Text». In den 1970er-Jahren arbeitete sie mit Buchstaben, Zahlen, Symbolen und Bildern. (*) Persönliche künstlerische Kontakte pflegte Pat Steir u.a. mit Sol LeWitt, Lawrence Weiner, Ines Martin, John Cage, Mary Heilmann,Elizabeth Murraym, Brice Marden und vielen anderen. Pat Steir, Painter of Luminous ‘Waterfalls,’ Dies at 87

Pat Steir, a trailblazing artist whose shimmering paintings, born of ingenuity and accident, evoke the energy of natural forces, most vividly in her celebrated “Waterfall” series, died on Wednesday in Manhattan. She was 87.

Ms. Steir often said that her “Waterfall” paintings painted themselves. Perched atop a tall ladder — or, in later years, a mechanical lift — she would spill paint onto canvas from a can or apply it in thick strokes, letting it streak down as it pleased.

“Gravity becomes my collaborator,” she told ARTnews in 2012. “The way the thing works is always in part a surprise.”

That humble description belied Ms. Steir’s preternatural sense for color and the verve with which she pursued her work, whose chance-based component was informed by Eastern art and philosophy and the aleatoric compositions of her friend the composer John Cage.

Steir was the subject of major exhibitions at Musée d’art contemporain de Lyon in 1990 and the Rhode Island School of Design Museum in 2010. She continued making through the end of her life, mounting a large exhibition at the Hirschhorn Museum in 2019 and another at Hauser & Wirth, New York, in 2024. On the occasion of the former, writing for frieze, Dereck Stafford Mangus cited the artist as saying, ‘I’m tired of people saying: “Painting is dead.” It’s not dead. I wanted to prove painting can be conceptual art,’ and responded to this declaration by writing, ‘Steir proudly and uncompromisingly keeps the tradition of painting alive – on entirely her own terms.’

Steir sustained a decades-long practice that explored abstraction through repetition, balancing control with chance happenings. She poured paint onto giant canvases from the top of a ladder or lift to create her colorful, asynchronous paintings.

Throughout her career, she welcomed the chaos as a way to teach herself and discover something new. “Learning means putting one foot in front of the other,” she told Artsy in an interview pegged to her show at Hauser & Wirth Los Angeles in 2024. “Sometimes you don’t learn correctly and make a misstep; other times you learn correctly and find a beautiful way.”

In den 1980er-Jahren begann sie dann mit den Wasserfall-Bildern: Dafür goss sie Farbe von Hebebühnen auf riesige, senkrechte Leinwände, wobei die Schwerkraft mitmalte. Diese Bilder machten sie weltweit bekannt. Pat Steir blieb bis ins hohe Alter kreativ, zuletzt stellte sie in Zürich aus.
