DER US-AMERIKANISCHE ILLUSTRATOR UND KÜNSTLER DREW STRUZAN IST GESTORBEN
Der am 18. März 1947 in Portland (Oregon) geborene US-amerikanische Künstler und Illustrator Drew Struzan (Bild) ist am 13. Oktober 2025 gestorben. Er wurde vor allem durch seine Filmplakate bekannt. Im Jahr 1965 begann er seine Ausbildung zum Illustrator am Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles, einer der führenden Design-Schulen weltweit. Zunächst entwarf er Covers für verschiedene Musikalben. Unter anderem erstellte er die Covers für das Black-Sabbath-Album «Sabbath Bloody Sabbath» und für Alice Coopers «Welcome to My Nightmare». 1975 begann er mit dem Design von Filmplakaten. Zuerst entwarf er Plakate für diverse B-Movies, aber 1977 kam schliesslich sein grosser Durchbruch, als er das Plakat für «Krieg der Sterne» entwerfen durfte. Durch diesen Erfolg wurden andere Filmstudios auf ihn aufmerksam und er bekam nun häufiger den Auftrag, Plakate zu erstellen. Insgesamt schuf er über 150 Filmplakate, darunter Plakate für die Filmreihen «Indiana Jones», «Star Wars», «Police Academy» und für viele andere. 2013 entstand mit «Drew: The Man Behind The Poster» eine Dokumentation über ihn. Movie poster legend Drew Struzan has passed away
Sad news reaches us today that Drew Struzan, the man behind so many classic Star Wars movie posters and novel and album covers, passed away yesterday. He was 78 years old. Born 18th March 1947, Struzan produced over 150 movie posters for franchises including Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Blade Runner, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Back to the Future, Harry Potter and so many more. A fixture of many of our childhoods, his work will live on far into the future.

Struzan’s Instagram account released a statement announcing his death. “It is with a heavy heart that I must tell you that Drew Struzan has moved on from this world as of yesterday, October 13th. I feel it is important that you all know how many times he expressed to me the joy he felt knowing how much you appreciated his art,” read the statement from longtime collaborator Greg Aronowitz.

Drew Struzan, artist of iconic movie posters, dies at 78
Struzan frequently collaborated with filmmakers Steven Spielberg and George Lucas, designing the posters not only for big, blockbuster hits such as The Empire Strikes Back and E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial but also cult classics like Blade Runner and The Thing.
Tributes to Struzan’s legacy have flooded social media since the announcement of his passing. Jim Lee, chief creative officer and publisher of DC Comics, wrote on Instagram, «His work captured the humanity, power and emotion of his subjects in ways not seen since. Thank you for bringing to life all the tentpole moments of my childhood and beyond.»
Filmmaker Guillermo del Toro posted on Bluesky, «The world lost a genial man, a genius communicator and a supreme artist. I lost a friend – beloved Drew.»
