DER BRITISCHE FOLKJAZZ-SCHLAGZEUGER UND SONGWRITER TERRY COX (PENTANGLE) IST GESTORBEN
Der am 13. März 1937 in High Wycombe (Buckinghamshire, England) geborene britische Folkjazz-Schlagzeuger und Songwriter Terence William Harvey «Terry» Cox ist am 19. März 2026 in Maó (Menorca, Spanien) gestorben. Mitte der 1960er-Jahre gehörte er zur Blues Incorporated von Alexis Korner, nahm mit Duffy’s Nucleus von Duffy Power auf und war in der Hausband von Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club. Mit Danny Thompson wechselte er 1967 von Alexis Korner in die Folkband Pentangle, der er bis zu ihrer (vorläufigen) Auflösung 1973 angehörte. Daneben spielte er mit Benny Carter und Barney Kessel sowie mit Roger Webb (1970) und dem Orchestra von Bobby Lamb und Ray Premru (1971). Auch war er an Einspielungen von The Humblebums, Bert Jansch und John Renbourn ebenso wie von Shirley Collins, Dana Gillespie und David Bowie beteiligt. Zwischen 1974 und 1982 gehörte er zur Band von Charles Aznavour, er war aber auch Sessionmusiker für Ashton & Lord, Bee Gees, Elton John u.v.a. Seit der Neugründung von Pentangle 1985 gehörte er der Band bis 1990 wieder an und ging mit ihr 2008 auch wieder auf Tournee. (*)

Drummer with Pentangle, the folk-rock group who found fame in the 1960s with their fusion of jazz, blues and traditional songs
On 27 May 1967, a bravely original band called Pentangle made their first major appearance, at the Royal Festival Hall in London. They were not a typical folk group, although they included the folk scene’s acoustic guitar heroes Bert Jansch and John Renbourn, along with the singer Jacqui McShee.
But they were not a typical jazz band either, despite playing lengthy improvisations and including the jazz and blues exponents Danny Thompson on bass and Terry Cox on drums. Instead, they presented a subtle and often complex fusion of jazz, traditional styles, new songs and blues.
Cox, who has died aged 89, played a key role in creating Pentangle’s unique style, but also worked with a remarkable array of artists, including Charles Aznavour, the Bee Gees, David Bowie and Elton John.

Terry Cox R.I.P. One of Pentangle’s five points of light – a drummer of rare instinct and imagination. Alongside Danny Thompson, he formed a rhythm section that redefined the boundaries of folk, jazz, and beyond. Our love and condolences go out to his family, friends, and all who knew him.

Jazz Remembered – Terry Cox
Drummer Terry Cox is probably best remembered in music for his time with the famous UK folk-jazz band Pentangle. From their formation in 1967 to 1973, the band included Jacqui McShee (vocals); John Renbourn (vocals and guitar); Bert Jansch (vocals and guitar); Danny Thompson (double bass) and Terry Cox (drums). Danny Thompson and Terry brought a key jazz influence to the band as they were already established musicians in the jazz world.

Le batteur Terry Cox, connu pour Pentangle et ses collaborations avec David Bowie ou Elton John, est décédé à 89 ans. Figure discrète mais essentielle, Terry Cox a marqué le rock et le folk britannique aux côtés des plus grands artistes.
Il fût l’un de ces nombreux musiciens de l’ombre sans qui les plus grands morceaux de l’histoire du rock n’auraient pas le même goût. Terry Cox est mort en Espagne, visiblement retiré de ses activités musicales. Passionné de jazz, il avait pourtant joué pour et avec les plus grands.
Son nom ne résonne pas forcément aux oreilles des aficionados du rock mais pourtant, le musicien a joué avec les plus grands. Il faisait, avant tout, partie de la vague british folk née à l’aube des années 70 avec des groupes tels que Fairport Convention. Lui était le batteur de Pentangle qui fit les beaux jours du flower power anglais, étonnante trajectoire pour un musicien plutôt destiné au jazz, mais bon…
Cependant, le nom de Terry Cox fût surtout associé à celui de David Bowie; c’est lui que l’on entend à la batterie dans Space Oddity ou sur deux titres du premier album d’Elton John. Leur collaboration se poursuit en 1971 avec la sortie de Madman Across the Water, puis viennent les Bee Gees ou encore Rick Springfield.
Dans le courant des années 70, Cox rejoindra les golgoths du rock que sont Jack Bruce, Charlie Watts et Ginger Baker. Sans oublier la collaboration avec the Alan Parsons Project pour qui Terry Cox avait écrit quelques titres avec le chanteur Lenny Zakatek.
