DER BRITISCHE MUSIKPRODUZENT, TONMEISTER UND MUSIKER MIKE VERNON IST GESTORBEN 

Der am 20. November 1944 in Harlow (Middlesex) geborene britische Musiker, Tonmeister und Musikproduzent Mike Vernon (Bild) ist am 2. März 2026 gestorben. Er war Gründer des Labels Blue Horizon Records und arbeitete mit vielen Grössen der britischen Bluesszene zusammen, wie zum Beispiel Bluesbreakers, Duster Bennett, Savoy Brown, Chicken Shack, Eric Clapton, Fleetwood Mac, Peter Green, Danny Kirwan, John Mayall, Christine McVie, Ten Years After oder Climax Blues Band. Obwohl Vernon hauptsächlich mit Blues assoziiert wurde, arbeitete er auch ausserhalb dieses Feldes, etwa mit David Bowie oder im Bereich des Progressive Rock mit Focus. 2013 erhielt Vernon den Lifetime Achievement Award des British Blues Awards. Mike Vernon, Legendary Producer and British Blues Champion Has Died Aged 81

The music world is in mourning following the announcement of the passing of legendary record producer, label founder, and blues champion Mike Vernon. The news was shared by his family via Vernon’s official social media channels.

To understand the trajectory of rock and blues music in the United Kingdom – and by extension, the world – one must understand the impact of Mike Vernon. Working largely out of Decca Records’ West Hampstead studios in the mid-1960s, Vernon was not just a producer; he was a gatekeeper who recognised the raw potential in young British musicians obsessively studying American blues records.

His most monumental contribution to music history came in 1966 when he produced Blues Breakers with Eric Clapton for John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers. The album, affectionately known as the “Beano” album due to Clapton reading a Beano comic on the cover, is widely credited with establishing the sound of British blues-rock. Vernon’s production captured a thunderous, distorted guitar sound that set a new benchmark for rock music.

From David Bowie to Fleetwood Mac and Eric Clapton, Mike Vernon’s ear was invaluable to British pop and blues

The musician, producer and label head, who has died aged 81, turned his boyhood passion for blues into a hugely impactful career.

First he published a blues fanzine, next he persuaded Decca Records to hire him to produce British blues bands, then he started his own indie label issuing 45s of African American blues artists, before CBS agreed to finance his Blue Horizon label. From the 1970s on, he would record and perform as a solo artist and band member; he was a producer for David Bowie, Fleetwood Mac, Eric Clapton and more. His was a life determined by his love for music, and he served his muse generously for more than 60 years.

Michael Vernon war ein britischer Produzent, Studioinhaber und Manager. Er gründete 1965 das Label Blue Horizon, in den 90ern die Label Indigo und Code Blues, arbeitete bereits in den 60s für Decca, produzierte John Mayall, Eric Clapton, David Bowie, Fleetwood Mac, Focus und die Alben unzähliger weiterer Künstler. Zu den von ihm begleiteten Singles gehören zahlreiche Hits wie zum Beispiel «Baker Street» von Gerry Rafferty und «In The Army Now» von Status Quo.

Mike Vernon war Musiker, spielte vor einigen Jahren mit seiner Band sogar am Lucerne Blues Festival. Doch der Community wird er in Erinnerung bleiben als jener Produzent, Studiobesitzer und Label Boss, der die britische Szene wie kein Zweiter geprägt hat.

Geboren als Michael William Hugh Vernon in Harlow, Middlesex, England, arbeitete Mike in den frühen 1960er-Jahren für Decca Records, wo er verantwortlich zeichnete für die beiden wegweisenden John Mayall-Alben «Bluesbreakers» mit Eric Clapton resp. «A Hard Road» mit Peter Green. Doch nicht genug damit: Die Platten von Fleetwood Mac, Savoy Brown, Chicken Shack, Duster Bennett, Ten Years After, der Climax Blues Band und viele andere Brit-Blues-Produktionen der ersten Stunde trugen Vernon’s Handschrift.

Um mehr Freiheiten für seine Tätigkeiten geniessen zu können, gründete Mike Vernon einerseits das Blue Horizon Label, andererseits richtete er mit seinem Bruder Richard in London die Chipping Norton Recording Studios ein, wo unter anderem auch Freddie King sein «Burglar»-Album einspielte. Als weitere US-Blues-Legenden nahmen etwa Eddie Boyd, Champion Jack Dupree, Mickey Baker, Johnny Shines, Bukka White, Lightnin’ Slim, Sunnyland Slim, Otis Spann oder Furry Lewis die Dienste von Mike Vernon in Anspruch.
