Der am 13. April 1951 in Greenville (South Carolina) geborene US-amerikanische Soul-Sänger Robert Peabo Bryson (Bild) ist am 2. Juni 2026 in Marietta (Georgia) gestorben. Balladen waren sein Spezialgebiet. Ab den späten 1970er-Jahren wurde er durch Duette mit Sängerinnen wie Natalie Cole, Roberta Flack und Melissa Manchester bekannt. Übertroffen wurden diese Erfolge noch durch die Welthits «Beauty and the Beast» (1991, mit Céline Dion) und «A Whole New World» (1992, mit Regina Belle), die beide aus Walt-Disney-Zeichentrickfilmen stammen und Bryson je einen Grammy einbrachten. Peabo Bryson, a silky-smooth singer whose lengthy résumé of chart-topping soul records, many of them duets with renowned female singers, earned him the nickname the Voice of Love, along with two Grammys for the Disney movie hits “Beauty and the Beast” and “A Whole New World,” died on Tuesday.

Peabo Bryson, Grammy-Winning R&B Singer, Dies at 75

Peabo Bryson, the two-time Grammy-winning R&B artist memorable for his work on the hit Disney songs “Beauty and the Beast” and “A Whole New World,” died Tuesday. He was 75.

Bryson died in Marietta, Georgia, three days after a representative for the singer announced he had suffered a stroke. He also had a massive heart attack in 2019.

He toured with Moses Dillard in the late 1960s before going on to release his first album, Peabo, in 1976 and signing with Capitol Records a year later. He moved to Elektra Records in 1984, where he voiced the theme song for the soap opera One Life to Live in 1985, before returning to Capitol a few years later.

Across his music career, he released some 20 albums, with songs including If “Ever You’re in My Arms Again,” “Can You Stop the Rain,” “Feel the Fire” and “Tonight, I Celebrate My Love,” with Roberta Flack.

Für seine Duette mit bekannten Interpretinnen, wie der Kanadierin Céline Dion, hat Paebo den Spitznamen «Stimme der Liebe» («Voice of Love») erhalten, schrieb die «New York Times».

Einen Grammy bekam er unter anderem für den Titelsong des Disney-Films «Die Schöne und das Biest» (1991). Mit dem Lied «A Whole New World» aus dem Soundtrack von Disneys «Aladdin» (1992, mit Regina Belle) stiess er damals Whitney Houston von der Spitze der US-Charts.
