DER FRANZÖSISCHE CLOWN, DRAMATIKER, REGISSEUR UND THEATERPÄDAGOGE PHILIPPE GAULIER IST GESTORBEN
Der am 4. März 1943 in Paris geborene französische Theaterprofessor, Dramatiker, Regisseur, Pädagoge und Meisterclown Philippe Gaulier (Bild) ist am 9. Februar 2026 gestorben. Er gründete die École Philippe Gaulier, eine französische Theaterschule in Étampes bei Paris. Nach seinem Studium bei Jean Vilar und Alain Cuny am Théâtre National Populaire und anschliessend bei Jacques Lecoq lehrte Gaulier an der École Internationale de Théâtre Jacques Lecoq. Er war bekannt für seinen legendär furchteinflössenden Unterrichtsstil. Gaulier veröffentlichte mit «Der Peiniger» (Le Gégèneur) ein Buch, in dem er seine Gedanken zum Theater darlegte und das Übungen zur Entwicklung schauspielerischer Fähigkeiten enthielt. Gaulier hatte massgeblichen Einfluss auch auf das britische Theater, wo seine Lehre die Gründung zahlreicher Theatergruppen inspirierte. Zu Gauliers Schüler:innen zählen unter vielen andern Sacha Baron Cohen, Emma Thompson, Helena Bonham Carter und Roberto Benigni. (*)

Comme les stars internationales Emma Thomson, Rachel Weisz, Helena Bonham Carter, Roberto Benigni ou encore Geoffrey Rush qui ont tous été formés selon ses préceptes, Sacha Baron Cohen ne jurait que par ce grand homme de théâtre aux cheveux hirsutes et au regard perçant.
Philippe Gaulier a définitivement quitté la scène ce lundi 9 février. Avec lui disparaît l’une des figures les plus singulières et essentielles du théâtre contemporain, un pédagogue hors norme qui aura consacré sa vie à une idée simple et radicale: le rire ne se fabrique pas, il se révèle.

Sacha Baron Cohen pays tribute to teacher who ran school outside Paris and was a formative influence on countless comedians and actors.
Famous for a brutally honest teaching style, Gaulier founded his school, now based in Étampes outside Paris, in 1980, after studying under Jacques Lecoq. There he taught aspiring performers on a first-come first-served basis without auditions, encouraging each student to “find your idiot”. He would make new students wear red clown noses, saying: “When a student puts one on, I see better how he was when he was a child.”

Philippe Gaulier, the influential French clown and teacher whose uncompromising approach reshaped contemporary comic performance, has died, aged 82.
Feared and adored in equal measure, Gaulier was best known not for his own performances but for the generations of performers he trained at his schools in Paris and later in Étampes. Through his teaching, he became one of the most significant forces in modern clowning, physical theatre and comic acting, with former students going on to shape theatre, film and television across Europe, Australia and beyond.
Few of the many thousands who attended Gaulier’s classes will ever forget his withering critiques of their skills and commitment. His deadpan assessments, delivered in front of classmates, became a rite of passage for students who learned – often painfully – to listen, respond and risk failure.

Gauliers Unterrichtsstil löste auch Kritik aus, weil er seine Schüler beleidigte und verspottete, wie die «New York Times» schreibt. Gaulier selbst verteidigte seinen Ansatz einst in einem Interview mit der Zeitung und meinte, unlustige Studenten hätten die Wahl: Sie könnten sich ändern oder gehen.
