Der am 17. April 1957 in der Bronx (New York City) geborene Afrika Bambaata (Bild), bürgerlich Lance Taylor, ist am 9. April 2026 in Philadelphia gestorben. Er war ein ab den 1970er-Jahren aktiver New Yorker Hip-Hop-DJ und Gründer der weltweiten Organisation Zulu Nation. Weiterhin war er Party-Organisator der späten 1970er- und frühen 1980er-Jahre. Er zählte zu den stilprägenden Figuren der Anfangszeiten im Hip-Hop. Weltweites Ansehen errang er schon Anfang der 1980er mit dem frühen Hip-Hop-Klassiker «Planet Rock». Bambaataa arbeitete mit so unterschiedlichen Künstlern wie Yellowman, UB40, Johnny Rotten von den Sex Pistols, James Brown, Leftfield, Gary Numan und DePoint zusammen. Durch Afrika Bambaataas Erfolg wurden auch seine Bands Planet Patrol, Soulsonic Force und Cosmic Force bekannt. Er brachte unter den Namen Time Zone, Shango, Hydraulic Funk, Khayan und Sirius B Platten heraus. Im Mai 2016 trat Afrika Bambaataa von der Führung der Zulu Nation zurück, nachdem ihm der bis in die 1970er-Jahre zurückreichende sexuelle Missbrauch von Kindern vorgeworfen worden war. Afrika Bambaataa, the visionary DJ, rapper, producer, and activist who became one of the first global hip-hop stars and later faced multiple, widespread accusations of child sexual abuse, died today at age 68.

“Today, we acknowledge the transition of a foundational architect of Hip Hop culture, Afrika Bambaataa,” Kurtis Blow wrote in a statement as executive director of the Hip Hop Alliance, a labor force founded by himself alongside Chuck D, KRS-One, and others. “[He] helped shape the early identity of Hip Hop as a global movement rooted in peace, unity, love, and having fun. His vision transformed the Bronx into the birthplace of a culture that now reaches every corner of the world … At the same time, we recognize that his legacy is complex and has been the subject of serious conversations within our community.”

Hip-hop pioneer Afrika Bambaataa (born Lance Taylor) has died at age 68. According to TMZ, which first reported the news, the “Planet Rock” artist died Thursday (April 9) from complications due to cancer.

Born in The Bronx, Bambaataa began DJing block parties in the South Bronx in the early ’70s, which led to him being credited as an originator of breakbeat DJing and one of the influential architects of hip-hop culture alongside founding father DJ Kool Herc.

As a teenager, Bambaataa traded his Black Spades gang ties to form the Universal Zulu Nation following a trip to Africa. He went on to found rap groups like Jazzy 5 and the Soulsonic Force, and brought rap to the masses with his first tour in 1982.

Afrika Bambaataa’s Complicated Legacy

The tributes to one of hip-hop’s founders were complicated by allegations of sexual abuse made against him in recent years.

Long ago, before sneaker deals and hip-hop Super Bowl halftimes, in a place far away from the world’s business centers, an American D.J. was instrumental in creating the image and sound of a nascent culture. That culture, widely derided at first, would come to dominate the world.

The time was the 1970s, and the place was the South Bronx. The D.J. was Afrika Bambaataa. Goaded (inspired is too mild a word) by the local competition in the form of the innovator D.J. Kool Herc, Mr. Bambaataa hauled his turntables and milk crates crammed with vinyl to the block parties where a fan base had already formed for what was not yet known as hip-hop.

The beats, turntable techniques and aura of the street gatherings drew their energy from a gang called the Black Spades, which Mr. Bambaataa would recast into a loosely affiliated Pan-African movement he christened the Universal Zulu Nation.

The Bronx native played a key role in shaping hip-hop in the 1980s, notably with the 1982 hit Planet Rock. He collaborated with a range of artists including John Lydon, George Clinton and James Brown.

Born Lance Taylor, he formed the hip-hop collective Universal Zulu Nation in the late 1970s, inspired by “father of hip-hop” DJ Kool Herc as well as the solidarity of the Zulu people of southern Africa.

In 1982, Bambaataa began playing electronic music as part of the group Ebn Ozn. He was inspired by European electronic groups such as Kraftwerk, the German band that he famously sampled in Planet Rock. The single became a club hit, and helped to establish electro funk as a genre.

In 1985, he helped to create the landmark album Sun City as part of Artists United Against Apartheid, a group of musicians who teamed up to protest apartheid in South Africa. Other musicians involved included Bob Dylan, Bono, Bruce Springsteen, Joey Ramone, Run-DMC, Lou Reed and Bonnie Raitt.

L’artista era nato il 17 aprile 1957 nel Bronx, ed è stato uno dei protagonisti della nascita della cultura hip hop negli anni 70. Durante l’adolescenza, fece parte della gang dei Black Spades, di cui divenne «warlord», ma successivamente trasformò la propria esperienza in uno strumento di pacificazione, fondando la Universal Zulu Nation per promuovere unità, pace e creatività tra i giovani. «Cominciando a elaborare allora la cultura che abbiamo chiamato hip hop – raccontava in un’intervista a Repubblica – eravamo guidati da una visione: in qualche modo pensavamo che avrebbe potuto svilupparsi in tutto il mondo».

Umstrittener Pionier des Hip-Hop

Afrika Bambaataa ließ sich von elektronischer Musik inspirieren und begann seine Karriere mit der Veranstaltung von Blockpartys in seiner Heimat. Im Jahr 1973 gründete er die Universal Zulu Nation; die Gruppe nutzte Hip-Hop, um friedliche Werte als Gegenpol zum rauen Ton des Stadtteils zu verbreiten.

Bambaataas plötzlicher Tod löste eine Flut von Beileidsbekundungen von Freunden und Fans auf der ganzen Welt aus. Hervorgehoben wird dabei sein unverkennbarer Einfluss auf den Hip-Hop. Der Rapper und Produzent ist vor allem für bahnbrechende Titel wie «Planet Rock» (1982) bekannt, der sich an Melodien und Beats von der Band Kraftwerk orientierte. Damit begründete Bambaataa den Electro Funk und hatte auch grossen Einfluss auf Musikstile wie House und Dance.
