IN 20 JAHREN HAT «E-CODICES» BEREITS 3’000 ALTE HANDSCHRIFTEN VERÖFFENTLICHT

Am 21. August 2025 hat die an der Universität Freiburg-Fribourg entstandene Initiative «e-codices» bereits das 3000. Dokument veröffentlicht. Dieser Meilenstein zeugt von der Langlebigkeit von «e-codices», das vor zwanzig Jahren seine ersten Handschriften veröffentlichte, und von seinem bisher sehr erfolgreich verfolgten Ziel, alle mittelalterlichen Handschriften der Schweiz zu veröffentlichen. In seinem neusten Update publiziert «e-codices» Fragmente und eine wertvolle Sammlung mittelalterlicher Universitätsreden und Predigten aus St.Gallen, eine weitere spektakuläre Bongars-Handschrift aus der Burgerbibliothek Bern, eine Reihe wunderschöner und faszinierender Handschriften aus Basel sowie eine exquisite Rolle mit Koran-Passagen und einem Gebet aus der Fondation Martin Bodmer.

Seit 2005 digitalisiert «e-codices» Handschriften aus allen Regionen der Schweiz. In den ersten zwei Jahren des Projekts wurden im Rahmen eines gemeinsamen Pilotprojekts mit der Stiftsbibliothek St.Gallen 130 Handschriften der Stiftsbibliothek online auf der Website der CESG (Codices electronici Sangalleses) veröffentlicht. Dank der grosszügigen Unterstützung der Andrew W. Mellon Foundation (New York), der Stavros Niarchos Foundation (Monaco), von e-lib – Schweizerische elektronische Bibliothek und zahlreicher weiterer Förderer konnte «e-codices» auf Handschriften aus der gesamten Schweiz ausgeweitet werden. Als «Virtuelle Handschriftenbibliothek der Schweiz» bietet «e-codices» kostenlosen Online-Zugang zu mittelalterlichen und frühneuzeitlichen Handschriften aus öffentlichen und kirchlichen Sammlungen sowie zahlreichen Privatsammlungen. Von 2013 bis 2020 war «e-codices» Teil des nationalen Programms «Wissenschaftliche Information» von swissuniversities zum Aufbau digitaler Infrastruktur.

«e-codices» war eine Initiative von Christoph Flüeler, damals Professor für Handschriftenkunde und Mittellatein und Mitglied des Mittelalterinstituts der Universität Freiburg-Fribourg.

On August 21, 2025, «e-codices» published document number 3000. This milestone marks the durability of «e-codices», which published its first manuscripts twenty years ago, and its success in pursuing its goal of publishing all medieval manuscripts in Switzerland. In this update, «e-codices» publishes fragments and a precious collection of medieval University speeches and sermons from St. Gall, another spectacular Bongars manuscript from the Burgerbibliothek Bern, a slew of beautiful and intriguing codices from Basel, and, from the Fondation Martin Bodmer, an exquisite roll with passages from the Koran and a prayer.

Since 2005 «e-codices» has been digitizing manuscripts from all regions of Switzerland. During the first two years of the project, as a result of a joint pilot project with the Abbey Library of St. Gall, 130 manuscripts from the Abbey Library were published online on the CESG (Codices electronici Sangalleses) website. Thanks to generous support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation (New York), the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (Monaco), e-lib – Swiss electronic library, and numerous other funding sources, «e-codices» has been able to expand to include manuscripts from all over Switzerland. As the «Virtual Manuscript Library of Switzerland» «e-codices» offers free online access to medieval and early modern manuscripts from public and church-owned collections as well as from numerous private collections. From 2013 to 2020, «e-codices» was part of swissuniversities‚ national program «Scientific information» for the establishment of digital infrastructure.

«e-codices» was an initiative of Christoph Flüeler, then Professor for Manuscript Studies and Medieval Latin and member of the Medieval Institute at the University of Fribourg.
