Der am 28. April 1950 in New York City geborene US-amerikanische Salsa-Musiker, Komponist, Sänger, Arrangeur, Bandleader und Musikproduzent Willie Colón (Bild) ist am 21. Februar 2026 ebenda gestorben. Willie Colón war ein Nuyorican, ein in New York geborener Sohn puerto-ricanischer Eltern. Der in der Bronx geborene Musiker wuchs nicht bei seinen Eltern, sondern mit seiner Grossmutter und seiner Tante auf. Durch sie war er von früh an mit der traditionellen Musik Puerto Ricos sowie mit anderer lateinamerikanischer Musik vertraut. Colón unterschrieb mit 15 Jahren einen Vertrag bei der Schallplatten-Firma Fania und gab dort sein erstes Album mit 17 Jahren heraus. Er arbeitete als Posaunist und unterstützender Sänger mit Künstler:innen wie Héctor Lavoe, Celia Cruz, Rubén Blades und Ray Barretto zusammen. Eines seiner Alben, «Siembra» – eine Koproduktion mit Blades – war lange Zeit die erfolgreichste Salsa-Platte aller Zeiten, bis ihn Jerry Rivera ablöste. Willie Colón fue una de las figuras centrales en el desarrollo de la salsa en Nueva York durante las décadas de 1960 y 1970. Inició su carrera a los 15 años, cuando firmó con el sello Fania Records, y alcanzó notoriedad con el álbum El Malo (1967), grabado junto a Héctor Lavoe. La colaboración entre ambos dio paso a producciones emblemáticas como Cosa Nuestra (1969) y Asalto Navideño (1971).

Willie Colón, a trombonist, singer, bandleader, composer and producer whose driving musical energy and mischievous bad-boy image — he was long promoted as “El Malo” — helped made him a luminary of New York salsa music, and whose 1978 collaboration with Rubén Blades, “Siembra,” became one of the top-selling salsa albums of all time, died on Saturday.

Raised in the South Bronx by his Puerto Rican grandmother, who encouraged his early interest in music, Mr. Colón showed virtuosic ability on the trombone and was working professionally by his early teens. He arrived on the scene in the mid-1960s, at the vanguard of rapidly changing musical tastes among the young in a politically charged era.

Willie Colón, the iconic trombonist, arranger, bandleader and producer who was one of the architects of salsa, a leader of the genre and one of its most towering names, died Saturday (Feb. 21).

His death was confirmed in a Facebook post by his longtime manager, Pietro Carlos. “Willie didn’t just change salsa,” wrote Carlos. “He expanded it, politicized it, clothed it in urban chronicles and took it to stages where it hadn’t been before. His trombone was the voice of the people.”

Zu seinem elften Geburtstag bekam Willie Colón von seiner Oma Antonia eine Trompete. Das Geschenk sollte das Leben des in der New Yorker Bronx geborenen Jungen prägen. Denn schon damals begeisterte er sich für die afrokaribische Musik, die seine aus Puerto Rico stammenden Großeltern tagtäglich im Radio hörten. Dass er selbst einmal als „King of Salsa“ gefeiert werden würde, ahnte der nun im Alter von 75 Jahren gestorbene Künstler damals nicht.
