Asha Bhosle — the voice of Bollywood for eight decades

Asha Bhosle has recorded songs in more than ten Indian languages. She began singing at the age of 10 and first song was “Chala Chala Nav Bala” for the 1943 Marathi film Majha Bal. She entered Hindi cinema five years later with “Saawan Aaya” in Chunariya (1948). Her work in Naya Daur (1957) brought her wider recognition. Over her career, she recorded more songs than any other female singer of her time. The Guinness World Records recognised her for the most studio recordings. She received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award and the Padma Vibhushan.

India’s No 1 Senorita: Farhan Akhtar honours Asha Bhosle at Jalandhar concert

Farhan Akhtar paid heartfelt tribute to legendary singer Asha Bhosle during a college fest. The actor-singer noted her as «India’s No. 1 Senorita», celebrating her timeless influence on Indian music and generations of listeners.

Performing at Lovely Professional University, the actor-singer paused his set to honour ‚Asha Tai‘ by singing her iconic track ‚Dum Maro Dum‘ from the 1971 film ‚Hare Rama Hare Krishna‘. The performance quickly turned into a sing-along, with the audience joining in to celebrate the singer’s enduring legacy.

Akhtar shared a video from the concert on Instagram on April 14, writing, “In memory of the legend herself it was incredible to see young students in the thousands show their love and respect for her music. To celebrate her is the best way to remember her (sic).”

Asha Bhosle saw queer Indian men when no one else did

With exaggerated breathwork and theatricality, Bhosle sang songs her elder sister wouldn’t and, in doing so, gave voice to a forbidden zone of desire.

When Asha Bhosle passed away yesterday at 92, it was a poignant reminder, if one were needed, that she was the first contemporary singer in India to give shape to queer desires. Across India, drag queens and kings continue to stretch their vocal cords singing her songs before hitting Cher’s high notes. In pride marches, there is always a group of gays with a portable boombox blasting ‘Piya Tu Ab To Aaja.’

‚Whispering, Breathing, Tittering‘: On Asha Bhosle’s Versatile ‚Body Voice‘

Though Bhosle’s ‚body voice‘ was associated with seduction—the “oomph songs”—her artistry was spread across genres.

Composer Anil Biswas’s well-known quip, “Asha [Bhosle] has body while Lata [Mangeshkar] has soul,” sealed the distinction between the two sisters, both playback sensations, secreting divergent musical legacies.

Full of breath, open vocals, suggestive laughter, and gibberish sounds, Bhosle fronted a certain genre of songs. The way the ‘Tu’ from ‘Piya Tu Ab Toh Aaja’ was extended and looped around Helen’s twisting body, followed by breath-work that fell to a beat the way a note would, for example. The way ‚Parveen Babi’ stepped off the stage to Bhosle’s ‘Aha’ in ‘Jawani Jaaneman’, for example. The way Zeenat Aman gave shape to every elongated word that Bhosle crooned in ‘Dum Maaro Dum’, for example. Bhosle recast singing its own form of acting by bringing the body into her music. So much so that when discussing ‘Piya Tu Ab Toh Aaja’, film scholar Usha Iyer described it as a “Helen-Bhosle cabaret number”.

Asha Bhosle: The sound of Bollywood dies aged 92

Asha Bhosle, a legendary Bollywood singer who became a cultural icon, has died aged 92, her son has confirmed.

The unrivalled queen of Indian playback singing died in Mumbai, having been admitted to hospital after suffering a heart attack.

Her death marks the end of an era in Bollywood music – with her career spanning more than eight decades and encompassing more than 12,000 songs.

Bhosle’s distinctive voice breathed life into countless film songs as actors lip-synced to her unforgettable tracks.

Her pervasive presence in Bollywood earned her the 1997 hit Cornershop tribute Brimful of Asha, and she was also known internationally for a collaboration with British musician Boy George.

Two-time Grammy nominee was one of Bollywood’s most versatile and celebrated voices

The Indian singer Asha Bhosle, whose voice defined Bollywood cinema and whose career spanned almost eight decades, has died in Mumbai at the age of 92.

Bhosle, who recorded more than 12,000 songs, became her country’s pre-eminent exponent of playback singing – recording tracks that were then lip-synced on film by actors. She also boldly embraced cabaret and western-influenced melodies to forge a distinctive musical identity.

Speaking to the Guardian in 2016, Bhosle said she had lived a tough but rewarding life. “I have faced life upfront, taken the blows head-on, never turned my back, and I am proud of all that I’ve achieved,” she said.

“I’m happy to have provided everything to my family and been successful in the career I chose. Music has given me great solace in my times of hardship. It has also brought me fame and wealth and I owe everything to music. I’ve enjoyed my life. There has been great tragedy but also moments of great happiness. I’ve taken both in my stride and if I were to replay my life, I would do it all over again.”

In addition to renowned career in India, Bhosle also collaborated with Boy George, Michael Stipe, and Gorillaz

One of India’s most popular and versatile “playback singers,” Bhosle is credited with recording over 12,000 songs over a career that spanned eight decades. Born into the famed Mangeshkar musical dynasty, Bhosle’s older sister was Lata Mangeshkar, dubbed India’s “Queen of Melody” who similarly became a famed playback singer, or a vocalist whose singing voice is used in Bollywood films; Mangeshkar died in 2022, also at the age of 92.

Her distinctive and adventurous voice was the soundtrack for generations of Bollywood films

For more than eight decades, Ms. Bhosle’s voice was threaded through the fabric of Indian cinema, particularly Bollywood, the Hindi film industry. She recorded thousands of songs across genres and languages, earning recognition from the Guinness World Records for the most studio recordings by any artist.

Her elder sister, the equally famous Lata Mangeshkar, who died in 2022, tended to be cast as the voice of the sweet and innocent heroine, while Ms. Bhosle was more often the voice of the cabaret dancer or the heartbroken courtesan. Ms. Mangeshkar embodied a desexualized and melodic classicism, and Ms. Bhosle represented playful reinvention. Their relationship, marked by both familial closeness and professional rivalry, became one of the defining narratives of Indian popular music.
