Der am 4. Oktober 1941 in Waco (Texas) geborene US-amerikanische Regisseur, Theaterautor, Kunstmaler, Lichtdesigner, Bühnenbildner, Videokünstler und Architekt Robert Wilson (Bild) ist am 31. Juli 2025 in Water Mill (New York) gestorben. Ab 1966 machte Wilson in New York mit seinen Theaterperformances auf sich aufmerksam. Sein internationaler Durchbruch begann mit der 1970 uraufgeführten, 7stündigen Silent Opera «Deafman Glance», die in New York, Nancy, Rom, Paris und Amsterdam gastierte. 1976 erfolgte in Avignon die Uraufführung seiner Oper «Einstein on the Beach» mit Musik von Philip Glass und Lucinda Childs als leitender Choreografin und Tanzsolistin. 1979 inszenierte Wilson an der Schaubühne Berlin sein Stück «Death, Destruction & Detroit», für das er mit einer Einladung zum Berliner Theatertreffen ausgezeichnet wurde. Robert Wilson galt als einer der bedeutendsten Repräsentanten des internationalen Gegenwartstheaters. Aufgrund seiner Vielseitigkeit hat er Theater und Performance-Kunst grundlegend erneuert. (*) Wilson wurde mit unzähligen Preisen und Auszeichnungen geehrt, darunter der «Goldene Löwe» der Biennale Venedig (1993), der Europäische Theaterpreis (1997), die Goethe-Medaille (2014) und der Praemium Imperiale (2023).

Robert Wilson, the acclaimed theater director, playwright and visual artist who shattered theatrical norms with stunning stagings of his own imaginative works as well as innovative collaborations with a diverse roster of artists, from Philip Glass to Lady Gaga, died on Thursday at his home in Water Mill, N.Y.
Tall, soft-spoken and a conservative dresser, Mr. Wilson looked more like an accountant than an avant-gardist with a long résumé of provocative productions. But there was nothing conventional about his sense of the stage. He often said that he was less interested in dialogue and a narrative arc than in the interaction of light, space and movement.

«Theatre is about one thing,» he said in 2019. «And if it’s not about one thing – it’s too complicated.»
As a visual artist, Wilson has created sculptures, designs for furniture and drawings. In 1993, he was awarded the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale for his sculptural work.
«I don’t think I’m very good at explaining my work,» he said in 2022 when he returned for the 57th Venice Biennale. «But it is something you experience.» Recognition of his talents also included a Drama Desk award in 1971 for direction, a Pulitzer prize nomination for drama in 1986 and an Olivier award for best opera in 2013.
His many big-name collaborators included Tom Waits, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Martin McDonagh, Allen Ginsberg, Laurie Anderson, Tilda Swinton, Jim Jarmusch and Lady Gaga.

Wirklich passiert ist in Robert Wilsons Theater nie etwas. Selbst dort, wo in seinen Operninszenierungen die Musik wildeste Bewegung suggerierte, herrschte auf der Szene statuarische Ruhe. Das fanden manche Zuschauer provokant. Oder langweilig. Je länger man aber darüber nachdenkt, was man selbst während solcher Abende erleben konnte, zieht man vor dem amerikanischen Bühnenmagier den imaginären Hut.

Robert Wilson brachte den Minimalismus ins Theater
Wilsons Inszenierungen sind unverkennbar. Sei es «Einstein on the Beach», mit dem er weltberühmt wurde, das famose Freischütz-Musical «The Black Rider» oder Virginia Woolfs «Orlando»: Die minimalistische Ästhetik ist auf den ersten Blick unverwechselbar und zieht das Publikum in ihren Bann.
Sattfarbene Lichträume, schemenhafte Gestalten, stark geschminkte Gesichter und abgespreizte Hände. Stilisierte Gesten, klare Linien, starke Achsen. Die Vertikale bedeutet die Zeit, die Horizontale den Raum. Eine strenge Form bis in die Fingerkuppen.
Daraus zog Wilson ab den 1960er- und 1970er-Jahren eine neue Freiheit, die sich fern des realistischen Theaters entwickelte. Den Äusserlichkeiten so mancher psychologischen Interpretation setzte er einen rigiden Formrahmen entgegen.
Damit wollte der Theaterkünstler eine andersgeartete Innerlichkeit zur Geltung bringen. Das war damals unerhört. Wilsons Kunst war einer antinaturalistischen Avantgarde verpflichtet und zugleich ästhetisch eigenständig.
